meet R.E. BartlettR.E. (Ruth) Bartlett is a Kiwi novelist I’ve known for a few years now. I was able to get her first published novel, The Personifid Project, included in the launch list at Realms, back in 2005. Ruth’s novel for Marcher Lord Press, The Personifid Invasion, is a sequel to that first one, but stands well on its own. Ruth’s humor and her vision for the future are among the things that draw me to her future. As are the spiritual and philosophical questions that inevitably come up when you’re talking about technology that allows people to cheat death indefinitely. With The Personifid Invasion she adds a new spiritual dimension to her futuristic vision, but I’ll let her explain that herself. |

the interviewMarcher Lord Press: Tell folks a bit about yourself, Ruth. R.E. Bartlett: I live in the North Island of New Zealand in a dairy-farming region. Although I’ve been a townie for most of my life, I love being out in the country. The cow smell has taken a bit of getting used to, but we won’t go into that! I’ve been writing for around ten years, honing my craft and trying to keep up with all the different ideas that beetle around in my brain. I consider myself to be a fantasy writer who does sci-fi on the side, so I find it odd that my sci-fi stories are being published first. Marcher Lord Press: What is your novel, in a nutshell? R.E. Bartlett: The Personifid Invasion is set in a possible future Earth. We [humans] are in the process of discarding the natural body and shifting to artificial versions of ourselves—“personifids.” The story follows adult siblings Aphra and Antha as they look for their long-lost sister. There’s just one problem—the sister resides in San Edhem, a city renowned for being overrun by “interterrestrials.” This means the personifids there may or may not be inhabited by humans. It’s all a little dicey, and requires perception to know what’s what. Marcher Lord Press: What's cool about your book? Why should I, a potential reader of your book, read it myself or buy a copy for someone I know? R.E. Bartlett: Well, I think the cover looks pretty cool. If you enjoy fantasy or sci-fi you should buy all of Marcher Lord Press’ novels, because in doing so you will support efforts to expand what type of fiction is available in the Christian market. The Personifid Invasion should fit your tastes if you like sci-fi peppered with action, futuristic technology, and humor. Marcher Lord Press: Why is Marcher Lord Press the ideal publisher for your novel? R.E. Bartlett: Marcher Lord Press is willing to stick its neck out and publish Christian speculative fiction. That’s a big deal right now in what appears to be a fledgling market. Also, Marcher Lord Press is forgiving towards my excessive use of commas. ;) Marcher Lord Press: What do you hope to accomplish with this novel? R.E. Bartlett: To entertain readers and take them into a different world for a while. If it gets a reader thinking about some of the bigger questions of life and looking at them from another viewpoint, then that’s good, too. Marcher Lord Press: Are there more books in you? If so, what might some of them be? R.E. Bartlett: At last count I had around twenty stories clogging up my brain. Several of them have spilled over onto my computer in various states of undress. I have a children’s fantasy trilogy that I’m currently revising, an adult fantasy series partially begun, another fantasy or sci-fi children's series that at this point is just a twinkle in my eye, and a mammoth standalone fantasy. The latter was the first novel I wrote. I pick it up from time to time and give it a bit of a rewrite as, being an older work, it needs it! And, most pertinent to the readers here, I have ideas for book 3 in the Personifid series. Marcher Lord Press: Have you written other Christian speculative fiction? If so, what? R.E. Bartlett: The Personifid Project is my only other published work so far. Yes, that’s book 1 in the Personifid series. It might help if readers run out and get that one before they read The Personifid Invasion. Marcher Lord Press: Where can folks go to read more of your stuff? R.E. Bartlett: The Personifid Project is available through most booksellers. I try to keep my website updated every now and then with news of what I’m working on. Marcher Lord Press: Finally, and most importantly, if you could travel to any time period or alternate world, what would it be and why? R.E. Bartlett: Tricky question. Most of the time I like the world I’m sitting in too much to bother getting up off the couch to enter a fake one. Besides, I do that all the time in my head when writing! But if prodded into making a decision, I would want to go to Narnia. I wouldn’t mind sailing on the Dawn Treader. Just so long as that huge sea serpenty thing doesn’t show up and try to wrap its arms around me. that's all from RuthBe sure to see the cover art and sample chapter from Mitch's novel, Hero, Second Class, and to visit R.E.
